Village band on form in the park; CONCERT REVIEW Hepworth Band

Byline: David Tinker

With flags waving the concert ended with Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance including Land of Hope And Glory and needless to say a repeat rendering was lapped up by the audience. The band's principal cornet player gave a nice account of How Great Thou Art and the band concluded their first set with the rock classic Music by John Miles. Despite the weather being wet for most of the day, thankfully it cleared up in the evening and a good Hepworth audience got in to the swing of things with Fantasia on British Sea Songs , Jerusalem, Nimrod, and David Thornton on euphonium giving a stunning performance of Rule Britannia.A spokesman said: "The band would sincerely like to thank all those who worked hard before and on the day to make it a great evening." The band will now be taking a three-week break before returning to work on The Test Piece Red Priest by Phillip Wilby for the British Open contest In September in the Symphony Hall Birmingham.

Smart Drivers Roll With Fuel Efficiency

With the summer driving season in full swing and thousands of motorists getting set to hit the highway this long weekend, drivers are reminded they can save at the pumps by ensuring their tires are properly inflated.

Despite these obvious benefits, too many Canadian drivers ignore tire inflation. According to a recent study commissioned by the RAC, one third of Canada's 21 million vehicles have at least one under-inflated tire, and only 30 per cent of drivers measure their tire pressures monthly.- Use a tire gauge when measuring pressure. Remove the cap from the valve stem, press the tire gauge onto the valve and take the pressure reading. Why does an under-inflated tire burn more fuel? A tire that is under-inflated does not roll as smoothly or as easily as it was intended. The result is increased rolling resistance, which causes the vehicle to consume more fuel than necessary.Learn more, visit www.betiresmart.ca .Contacts: Xposure PR Kevin Morrison (905) 339-2209, ext. 3 Kevin@xposurepr.comEvery year Canadian drivers waste millions of litres of fuel simply because their tires are not inflated to the vehicle manufacturer's recommendation. In 2011, Natural Resources Canada estimates that under-inflated tires will waste 533 million litres of fuel at a cost of $722 million in unnecessary fuel bills. This wasted full, which is enough to power 275,000 vehicles for a full year, will also release an additional 1.2 million tonnes of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.- Remember to only measure pressure when the tires are cold. If you have been driving, wait three hours before measuring tire pressure.- Add air until the recommended air pressure is achieved. If you overfill the tire, release air by pushing on the metal stem in the centre of the valve, then re-check the pressure.Tire makers recommend an easy, four-step approach to proper tire inflation:

Step OneThe RAC Tire Inflation and Attitudinal Study interviewed 1,811 drivers. The results are considered accurate within /- 2.5 percent, 19 times out of 20.Step ThreeStep TwoThe study also revealed major knowledge gaps about tire inflation. For example, only 52 per cent of drivers knew how to locate the vehicle manufacturer's recommended tire pressure (owner's manual or vehicle placard) and 26 per cent wrongly believed that the pressure stamped on the sidewall, which refers to the maximum pressure a tire can contain under maximum load, was the recommended inflation level. The RAC's study also revealed that more than half of drivers (58%) were aware of work done by Canada's provincial Tire Stewardship Boards to manage scrap tire recycling operations and lengthen tire life through public education. Of this group, the vast majority (81%) were either "very satisfied" or "satisfied" with the manner in which scrap tires are managed.Step FourThe RAC recommends motorists take fuel economy and environmental protection into their own hands by buying a reliable tire gauge and using it at least once a month to ensure their tires are always inflated to the vehicle manufacturer's recommendation.- Find the recommended inflation pressure for your tires on the vehicle placard. Check the owner's manual for its exact location.According to the Rubber Association of Canada (RAC), which represents tire makers, the average Canadian motorist who drives 20,000 kilometers per year can save more than $100 dollars at the pumps if their tires are properly inflated. For drivers who spend considerably more time behind the wheel, the annual fuel savings can add up to hundreds of dollars."Properly inflated tires deliver the fuel efficiency and exceptional performance that tire makers want every driver to have," says Glenn Maidment, president of the RAC. "Drivers need to know that improperly inflated tires waste fuel; increase stopping distance, and hamper performance by lessening vehicle stability, particularly when cornering. All it takes to get the outstanding fuel economy and performance your tires were designed to deliver is to use a reliable tire gauge each month to measure and, if necessary, adjust your tire pressures."Shortened tire life should also be of concern to motorists who want to save their money and help the environment. According the RAC, under-inflation can carve as much as 15,000 kilometers off the service life of a tire, adding to tire-related vehicle costs and the number of scrap tires.

No Toon return for Bassong or Beye; No Toon return

Byline: LEE RYDER

Beye arrived in 2007 and quickly became a fan favourite, while Bassong spent just one season at the club, during the 2008/09 campaign, before moving to Tottenham Hotspur. And Bassong, who United picked up pounds 8m for two years ago, is understood to be available for half of the price he was sold for during the Chris Hughton era. However, both pushed hard to get out of the club after United were relegated to the Championship. Since then, neither player has been able to nail down a first-team place at their new clubs. The transfer search has still been in full swing during the Magpies' tour of the States and, with Newcastle due back on Tyneside today, that search was set to continue.FORMER STAR Sebastian BassongCAPTION(S):Both players walked out on the Magpies in the aftermath of relegation, but enjoyed cult hero status during their short stays on Tyneside.Beye is available on a free transfer from Aston Villa with his contract at Villa Park set to expire at the end of the season, and it is unlikely that he has a future in the second city.Pardew's main concern is finding a leftback and a striker in the remaining period of the transfer window. The Chronicle reported yesterday that experienced strikers such as Jermain Defoe and Peter Crouch were under consideration, while leftbacks Nicky Shorey of West Brom, Stephen Warnock of Aston Villa and Manchester City's Wayne Bridge are also on the Magpies' shortlist. A Toon source said today: "There are other priorities at the moment. "The manager is focusing on getting in the striker he needs. "And the fact that a left-back is needed in the event of Jose Enrique leaving is also not lost on anybody here. "It is very much a case of judging Newcastle's business when the window is closed."NEWCASTLE United have turned down the chance to take back old boys Sebastian Bassong and Habib Beye.

Buy Swing Set For Kids

What is the best toy for kids to play around to gain physical and mental benefits? The PS3 or XBOX 360 with large amount of video games which cost lots of money to keep up the game trend with more advanced technologies or the quality and enjoyable outdoor toys with reasonable prices. The answer is simple for wise choice. But it could be difficult to decide which kind of outdoor toys to devote to as there are so many different types of outdoor toys like ride on toys, swing sets, pools or sand tables even trampolines. However here we encourage parents to buy swing set which is the one of most popular outdoor toys for playground and backyard.

Swing sets have three main different categories, metal swing set, plastic swing set and wooden swing set. Metal swing set used to be the popular one in playground and backyard, and is trend to be replaced by wooden swing set which is more safe and durable. Plastic swing set is preferred by young kids. Playing on swing sets with other kids is good for kids physical growth, hand-eye coordination and social skills.Kids are never tire of climbing up and sliding down. There are many additional play equipments that can be attached to swing set to provide maximum fun with limited space. Climb wall and slide are most common attachments for swing set on which kids can spend whole day to play. Some other play equipments are also popular on swing sets, such as monkey bars, gliders and even sand tables. Numerous additional attached play toys are available are another advantage of owning swing set at backyard.

However the biggest barrier that keeps parents away from swing sets is that the high price compared with other outdoor toys like plastic car. And even the swing sets that are made with best quality lumber material and come with many play toys could cost thousands dollars. But the bright side is that the swing sets can last for many years accompanying the growth of children through their childhoods. Use Swing Sets to Create an Outside Entertainment Area for The Whole Family

Before you rush out and get your child a new DVD movie or some video game to keep them occupied, think about the healthy exercise and hours of fun that can be derived from taking swing sets and creating an entertainment area in your backyard. With some well placed equipment, you can add a whole new paradigm to your child's life, and your yard can become a source of constructive, healthy fun for them and all their friends right where you can keep an eye on them.

Concentrate your focus on the features you wish to include in your play area, and try to incorporate items for the adults in the family too. While you might have to pay a little more for these stronger and larger playsets, there are many advantages in the long run. For one thing, your children can get many years of enjoyment from them and will not likely outgrow them until their teenage years when they start thinking they're too mature. It is a matter of strategizing and investing more now for a bigger return on investment in the years to come. When you are planning this outside entertainment area, you want to use your imagination, and who has more imagination than a child? You may want to take your children along for the trip to purchase your equipment. Your child may provide a different point of view and bring some life and excitement to the planning process. On the other hand, if you carefully strategize your entertainment area for those later years, your backyard can become the area where they will want to bring their friends, to break the doldrums. Stronger and larger sets can even be used later on for grown-up exercises like, pull-ups and upside-down stomach crunches, during their muscle-forming years. If you add a trampoline or swimming pool later, make sure that you have plenty of room. For this reason, it is important to map out your plans and carefully place all of the fun equipment where you want it to stay permanently. For example, you might want to place a slide where it can end in a swimming pool for the children.Use Your Imagination And Child's InputHere are some things to consider before making a purchase:Consider Investing in Wooden Swing Sets Heavily constructed equipment made from Western Red Cedar, Cypress and Redwood is naturally decay resistant, attractive and last for years. The materials don't require treatment with toxic chemicals because they are strong by nature.Adult Strength EquipmentMake sure that you think about additions to your entertainment area because you want to permanently affix your play features to the ground for safety. In addition, you might consider sand or wood chips to make a softer landing surface, in case of falls.

It is a matter of strategizing and investing more now for a bigger return on investment in the years to come.

Vital points on board after scare

MIDDLESEX maintained their LV= County Championship push by banking 23 Division Two points after wrapping up a seven-wicket win over Derbyshire at Lord's.

With such a small target ahead of them, Middlesex set out on the final morning with forceful intent, only to pay the price by losing in-form openers Sam Robson and Scott Newman in the space of six overs.Chasing only 91 for their sixth win of the campaign on the final day, Middlesex suffered three early scares before marching home to victory with 74 overs to spare, courtesy of an unbroken fourth-wicket stand of 66 between Chris Rogers and Neil Dexter. Both fell to the swing bowling of Tony Palladino who, with his third ball of the day, had Robson (one) caught in the gully by Wayne Madsen off a miscued back-foot force. With his score on nine, left-handed Newman then padded up to a Palladino in-swinger to go leg before without playing a stroke for the second time in the match to make it 18-2. The home demise continue when Dawid Malan, fresh from a career-best 143 in the first innings, aimed a back-foot force against a lifting delivery from Tim Groenewald only to edge a catch through to the wicketkeeper Luke Sutton.

Derbyshire's former captain Rogers then teamed up with his new Middlesex skipper Dexter to ease tension among a smattering of home supporters.

Fore the love of the game

Summer rain drizzles as two golfers who are no taller than a standard driver methodically set golf balls on wooden tees and swing. Their faces light up when they see Patrick White, the 25-year-old head golf pro at Crooked Stick Golf Club, striding toward them.

Still, he practiced golf every chance he had, along with taking classes and studying for Professional Golf Association exams each year. These written and practical exams, which White described as "pretty extensive," included topics such as the PGA constitution, golf tournaments, club repair and golf cart fleet management. The average tenure for a golf pro at any club is about seven years, and Pancakehopes White sticks around a while before looking to move.Although he declined to disclose his salary, White said head golf pros typically make $50,000 to $125,000 per year. Some pros choose to pursue additional certifications and continue to take exams, but White is content for now.White first picked up a golf club in ninth grade, which nowadays could be considered late for a youth sport. Although the Pennsylvania native was in the midst of two-a-day soccer practices at the time, he said he "absolutely fell in love with the game."The position was "pretty good for a kid just getting out of school," White said. With the work experience and responsibility the job would give him, he "couldn't pass up the opportunity to come back to Crooked Stick."White works every day, rain or shine. He starts most mornings at his desk answering e-mails: Club members request help setting up rounds at in-demand courses across the country, for example, golf merchandisers pitch new products, and tournament sponsors check in.In the off-season, Crooked Stick reduces its staff, and White must pick up duties others handle during the busy season.Tee timeHitting his strideThe job appears to suit him. White addresses each member by name and asks questions about everything from their golf games to a recent trip a member took to Hilton Head, S.C.Being a golf pro is a far cry from being a professional golfer. But being "a face for the members" isn't always easy, White said. His office - filled with tournament paraphernalia and several pairs of golf shoes he matches with his clothing each day - is right outside the club's pro shop, allowing White to help members choose equipment when necessary. He also manages the operating budget for golf activities at Crooked Stick. While he declined to reveal the budget, he said he oversees equipment repair, supplies, education and payroll."Obviously, I love to play golf. So if I can interact with members while I play golf, it's a perfect day," he said. The tournament will "display our golf course as one of the best," White said. "The economic impact it'll make in the community is outstanding. It'll put Crooked Stick in the forefront on national television, which is obviously great. It will showcase our golf course and our community as well."He also fields calls, often last-minute, throughout the day asking if he can fit a golf lesson into his schedule, and he pencils adult and youth golfers alike into a clean calendar book he keeps on his desk. Typically, White spends about 10 hours each week on lessons, but he teaches as many as he can. After his freshman year, White completed an internship at Laurel Valley Golf Club in Pennsylvania, which hosted the Senior PGA Championship that summer. When he returned to school, he began to research clubs for future internships and found Crooked Stick, consistently ranked by Golf Digest as a "Top 100" course."I liked the challenge," he said. "I was very competitive.""You have to have an upbeat personality, I would say, especially working the hours that you do," he said. "When it comes to 6 o'clock, you can't just go into a hole. You have to still be the same guy you were drinking your cup of coffee at 7:30" in the morning."Crooked Stick needs to be a special place, and our members' expectation level is for that," said Pancake, now director of golf and club operations at the club.As part of the program, he was required to pass a players' ability test, scoring 156 or less on 36 holes. Then he could apply to be a professional. By accepting prize money in a pro golf tournament, White surrendered his amateur status and was not allowed to play on the school's golf team.White says he never aspired to play golf professionally, but he quickly realized he might be able to make it a career, anyway. He began working at Pleasant Valley Country Club and decided to hang up his soccer cleats and play golf exclusively."The more our faces are out there, the more Crooked Stick is going to be out there," White said. "On those days, it's very important how we handle ourselves. It's something we enjoy doing, and important we represent the club well.""You need to present yourself professionally at all times, inside and outside the club," he said. "If you go out to dinner and see members, they should be able to say, 'Hey. That's my pro."'"How do you like your new clubs?" he asks one. When he's not shuffling paper or managing his staff - including five other golf pros - he's on the course, driving range or chipping and putting greens, offering hands-on assistance. White must be available at all times to answer members' questions and make sure everything is running smoothly: There are no tee times at Crooked Stick, which can complicate course logistics.White said he initially was attracted to the course's Pete Dye design and the fact that it had hosted the LPGA Solheim Cup in 2005. Later, he did his research and "found out about John Daly," referring to the golfer's historic rookie win as a ninth-alternate in the 1991 PGA Championship at Crooked Stick.White interviewed with then-head-pro Tony Pancake during his winter break, and decided he and Crooked Stick were a match. He completed an additional internship at Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pa., but after graduation accepted an offer to become Crooked Stick's tournament director.White usually plays one round of golf with club members weekly, which he admits is another fun part of the job. But on the course or off, he's never really off duty.Pancake - White's predecessor and mentor - praised the younger man's attention to detail. After his internship interview, White sent individual thank you notes to each person he met.Events do the same for Crooked Stick, he said, which is why excitement is building for the BMW Championship scheduled for September 2012.Teaching golf lessons isn't quite as glamorous as hitting the links with members of the exclusive club in Carmel, but White said it's one of his favorite job-related duties nevertheless. The fact is, his 90-plus-hour work weeks don't offer much glitz."You start looking for that head pro job when you're about 25," he said. "I was extremely fortunate, being in the right place at the right time.... I'm fortunate that I'm at a club that understands and respects the work that I do.""His title is head professional, [but] he still works under my guidance ... so eventually he may want to get out on his own," Pancake said. "But Crooked Stick is such a reputable club, I would expect him to stay."He addresses the junior golfers by name, corrects their mistakes gently, and offers suggestions for improving their grip and swing."The weather's good, isn't it?" he jokes as they show him what they've practiced since last week, hitting ball after ball onto the driving range.White enrolled at Pennsylvania State University, one of 20 universities that offered a program for aspiring golf pros. He majored in recreational park and tourism management, choosing the professional golf management option.Playing an individual sport was an adjustment, especially when he'd dedicated himself to soccer for most of his childhood, but White said he confidently told his parents he could perform well on the course.White became head golf pro at age 24 - fairly typical for the industry.

"His title is head professional, [but] he still works under my guidance ... so eventually he may want to get out on his own," Pancake said. "But Crooked Stick is such a reputable club, I would expect him to stay."

There are many combinations available today that will exercise your child's mind and body. In addition to swings, most backyard swing sets come with a slide. It's no handicap; Kevin swings into action for disabled golfers

Byline: LINDA WHITWAM

Kevin, who is a Town season ticket holder, has attended four of these events and they have given him a new lease of life. He counts the days to the next competition and has taken on the role of DGS handicap secretary. (His own handicap is now 18).Kevin, 52, of Pinecourt Mews, Netherton, had previously been a passionate sportsman, playing football, cricket and volleyball.A number of taster sessions at driving ranges and golf courses are also planned for September and October. He said: "The DGS is a wonderful thing, seeing the joy that it brings individuals with a disability. One by one, as his ankle injury worsened, he had to give up these sports. Then he found a new passion: golf.It meant his days of playing golf were badly hit. But now he hopes to set up a branch of the Disabled Golf Society in Huddersfield, to help people like him."If you are disabled and already playing golf, there is a high standard of golf and some healthy competition within the society."I would not go out of the house and became depressed and angry."He is now looking for local sponsors for this and future events and hopes to start a dialogue with other golf clubs in Kirklees which may be able to offer facilities.Members enjoy playing golf at all levels and overcome such disabilities as limb amputations, hip and knee replacements, arthritis, multiple sclerosis, autism and blindness. The society, which welcomes both experienced and new golfers, organises golf days and competitions throughout the country, although most are in the south of England or Midlands. Each event includes a taster session, often with specialised equipment, which gives non-golfing people with disabilities a chance to try out the sport. He said: "My life changed a couple of years ago after the bad fall. I felt like I had gone from hero to zero.DGS is a not-for-profit organisation which runs in tandem with the Fairways4all charity.KEEN sportsman Kevin Booth felt his life was over after a bad fall left him unable to walk more than a few yards."In fact we are looking for some good disabled golfers to join a team to take on Scotland at Slaley Hall in Northumberland in October. We need some true Northern grit.Kevin said: "We encourage anyone interested in disabled golf to attend at Dewsbury to support those playing and see what the society is all about. The society caters for all disabilities. He has already had his first success. On Monday, September 5, the first-ever Disabled Golf Society event will be hosted in Kirklees at Dewsbury District Golf Club. It will be a qualifier for all disabled golfers who hold an EGU handicap or an equivalent society handicap and can complete 18 holes."If you are disabled and have never tried golf, it can be very rewarding and gives people a new lease of life."Kevin, who is registered disabled and receives a war pension from the RAF, discovered the Disabled Golf Society (DGS). It was set up by a keen golfer who suffered serious injuries in a car crash and in less than two years it has grown to a membership of over 500."I have been inspired by people at these events and I am channelling all of my energies into the society."The accident, in 2009, was the latest in a series of falls caused by an old injury sustained in the 1980s when he was a ground radio engineer in the RAF."At a recent day at Northallerton and Thirsk Golf Club, the club captain was moved to tears. He had not realised what a humbling experience it was.Kevin regularly played three or four times a week and became one of the game's elite single figure golfers with a handicap of six. He was even captain of Rutland County Golf Club, near where he was living in 2002.* BIG HIT: Kevin Booth, handicap secretary for the Disabled Golf Society, with wife Cerise. Bringing birds up close; these outdoor aviaries are sociably near decks and patios

Designed for viewing, these three outdoor aviaries show sensible, enjoyable ways to house pet birds. Rather than isolate them in cages where they would rarely be seen or heard, these California structures, designed as integral parts of outdoor living areas, keep birds sociably close to decks and patios.

A porch swing to enjoy the singing In Whittier, Priscilla and Michael McClure chose to build their aviary in their property's best location for birds-under trees in the southwest corner of their garden, next to an 8-foot wall. The birds thrived, but the McClures discovered they had little interaction with them except at feedings. They couldn't bring the birds closer to the house, so they built a deck around the aviary (see photograph above). "Now the deck provides an intimate setting, where we can relax and enjoy the birds," says Mr. McClure. Patio aviary for indoor/outdoor viewing Taking advantage of a patio overhang, Martha and Manuel Coronado of Citrus Heights tucked their aviary part way under its eave This shelters the aviary and also makes it an intimate part of their living area. In the Sacramento Valley, some winters can be nippy. "When it's cold," says Mrs. Coronado, "we cover the north and south sides with plastic and plug in a covered electric light to warm our birds." Freestanding aviary, viewing deck In Santa Rosa, Carol and Bill Dickinson put an aviary off an existing deck (see photograph at near left) so they could watch their birds-doves, canaries, and finches-and listen to their songs. "It's like a symphony when they all sing together." Two dead madrones support the aviary's roof beam. Branches, secured into holes drilled in the trees' trunks, form perches. The front, part of the sides, and about a third of the roof are open for viewing; the rest of the structure is shingled. Some practical hints For advice on choosing birds, see page 122. And be sure to check local building codes before you build an aviary. Choose your site carefully. It should be warm in winter but not an inferno in summer. A wind-protected south or southeast exposure is best. In hot inland areas, provide afternoon shade. Dimensions. Small birds such as cockatiels and finches need room to fly. Make cages longer than wide-at least 5 feet wide and 10 feet long is best. Heights are usually 6 to 9 feet. Foundation. Use concrete blocks, footings, or posts, or lay a concrete slab. If burrowing rodents are a problem, set a sheet-metal or wire-mesh barrier 18 to 24 inches deep around the foundation. Floor. A concrete slab is easiest to clean (make sure it drains). For an aviary with plants, cover soil with sand, gravel, or wood shavings. Change shavings regularly; hose down sand and gravel. Framing. Wood is commonest (use nontoxic paint or stain), but steel or plastic tubing also works. Cover the frame with 1/2-inch aviary wire or 16-gauge welded wire mesh (12-gauge for large birds). Shelter. Protect birds from direct sun, rain, and wind by covering a section of the roof and part of the sides with wood or fiberglass (if weather is hot, cover fiberglass with shadecloth). To keep birds from pecking through wood, cover the inside of the aviary with mesh. Keep sheltered area light, or birds won't use it. Doors. To prevent escapes, plan a 3-foot-square vestibule" with two doors that swing in-one from the outside and one to the aviary. Enter and close the outside door before going into the aviary.

Sam's Northeast rollout underway; move may trigger warehouse war - Sam's Wholesale Club planning stores in Northeast

Sam's Northeast Rollout Underway

Sam's Northeast expansion also extends the reach of its parent Wal-Mart into a brand new region, paving the way for the firm to follow with Wal-Mart stores. Up to now, Sam's has opened clubs only in areas that house Wal-Marts.The top two chains in sales and stores are Sam's and Price Club, but they only share Virginia as a common state. The Price Club's four stores are in Richmond and the Tidewater area, while Sam's has one unit in Roanake. As awareness of the industry has grown among businessmen and consumers, membership warehouses have found that the resulting higher traffic and sales means that stores can be closer to each other and still be viable. This trend should cause more direct competition in the Northeast, a situation similar to that in Southern California. The Northeast is BJ's home market, with 16 of its 22 stores there. Sam's is going into five of BJ's markets. Price Club and PACE each have three units in the region, the Warehouse Club two and Makro and Net Cost Club one each. While Sam's has locked up the sites for its 18 stores, the four other membership warehouses are pursuing locations.BJ's is in Albany, Rochester, Syracuse, Wilmington and Portsmouth.Much of the warehouse clubs' expansion in the Northeast will likely see chains either taking locations adjacent to strip centers or shopping malls or even developing their sites into shopping centers. The Price Club is turning a number of its stores, including the one in North Haven, Conn., into shopping centers.BENTONVILLE, Ark. -- Sam's Wholesale Club plans to invade the Northeast with at least 18 stores during the next 30 months, an expansion move that has enormous implications for the membership warehouse field and its parent company, Wal-Mart.PACE is set to open its first store in the Northeast in Philadelphia. This is a natural expansion from the Baltimore/Washington area where it already has three units, with more due. The Price Club also has three stores in the Baltimore/Washington area. But the membership warehouses could face problems obtaining locations because the low rental, large undeveloped industrial sites favored by wholesale clubs are scarce in most metro areas in the Northeast and community opposition to large shopping centers is growing. Any slowdown in the Northeast's economy could help membership warehouses expand by making sites available at low, even, distress prices.Price Club plans to open a store this summer in Babylon, N.Y., as part of its expansion that will be focused primarily on the Western states and along the Eastern Seaboard. BJ's plans to unveil three or four stores in the Northeast, reportedly including units in Milford, Conn.; Edison, N.J.; and Allentown, Pa.Sam's is moving into the Northeast for the same reason other membership warehouses are expanding in the area: the 10-state region is a densely populated area with an average income higher than that of the country as a whole. It also has a strong, diversified economy that has weathered business swings better than other regions of the nation. Sam's first two stores are set to open this fall in Atlantic City and Delran Township, N.J.Once Sam's opens its Northeast stores, the West Coast and Rocky Mountain regions will be the only areas of the country where Wal-Mart doesn't operate either discount stores, membership warehouses or hypermarkets.Currently, the Northeast is understored with warehouse clubs. The region has only 26 wholesale clubs in eight states--less than the three dozen doing business just in Los Angeles alone. The industry's looming expansion, however, could result in the 10-state region getting about 50 new membership warehouses, including the Sam's, by the end of 1991.Makro, with one store in Langhorne, Pa., (and two in Baltimore/Washington) plans to expand to about 10 units in the Northeast by the end of next year, with an opening in Hartford, Conn., set for this year and in Deptford and Cherry Hill, N.J., in 1990.Sam's move into the Northeast follows that of Price Club, which has targeted the region as a prime growth area. The Price Club learned about marketing in the area from stores in North Haven, Conn.; Edison, N.J.; and Nesconset, N.Y.; and is now acquiring sites for more units.Sam's thrust in the Northeast focuses the spotlight on the extensive expansion planned by that chain and at least four other membership clubs--BJ's Wholesale Club, the Price Club, Makro and PACE--for the region, while also highlighting the growing competition among wholesale clubs throughout the nation.A number of the Sam's will follow the chain's new prototype, which includes such service departments as a scratch bakery, fresh produce, optical section and business service center in units that range in size up to 135,000 square feet. The Sam's in Delran Township, for example, will be 128,000 square feet.

BJ's is in Albany, Rochester, Syracuse, Wilmington and Portsmouth.
