The screening, featuring Q&A with key cast and crew, provides film fans with the first opportunity to see the new feature, which will tour other UK cities this autumn.Co-director Philip Shotton, explains the innovative filming techniques that set the mood for this unsettling new film: "The whole film was workshopped with the young cast, using improvisational acting techniques to create believable characters and naturalistic performances.Rising Tide's cast and crew all hail from the North East, making Newcastle a natural choice for the premiere. Internationally-renowned Northumbrian musician Kathryn Tickell and several North East bands add a foreboding, atmospheric soundtrack to the film as the storm clouds gather over the Northumberland coast.Rising Tide was funded and produced by Northern Film and Media - the Newcastle-based creative industry development agency."Despite the hardships it was a fantastic experience for cast and crew alike - we all enjoyed it so much we've already filmed the sequel!" Joe MacCabe, who plays Joe in Rising Tide, adds: "The production process was exciting for me as the film was devised through workshops and various scenes were created on set through improvisation. This kind of development helped create a raw and distinctive film with fantastic performances.CAPTION(S):The island has a hold on the group as the gentle lapping sea on the sunny shores turns sinister and the realisation dawns that they are prisoners.Exams finished and the holidays in full swing, it should have been a memorable last adventure with friends before going separate ways. It was, but for all the wrong reasons. As the friends raise a toast 'to friendship', Izzy, the newest member of the close-knit group, is hiding a devastating past which follows them to the fateful camping trip to the tidal Holy Island.RISING Tide, an innovative, ghostly new British independent film directed and set in coastal Northumberland will premiere at Newcastle's Tyneside Cinema next week. The development of the film was intense and involved all 10 actors working closely together before filming had even began. This created the vital on-screen chemistry you see in Rising Tide which makes it such a raw and unique film." * Rising Tide premiere screening and Q&A, Wednesday, August 17, Tyneside Cinema, Newcastle, at 6pm.But worse than the spectres of the island are the ghosts of Izzy's past, ghosts that will never leave her alone and are intent on ensuring she never has friends again.First settled on by Monks who were murdered in a bloody battle by Vikings in 793AD, the spiritual island has its own ghosts as the friends are trapped by the rising tide.NORTHERN FRIGHTS Rising Tide is a ghost story about a students'camping trip to Holy Island that doesn't go according to planA sinister story about a group of college leavers embarking on their last adventure together, the film is a coming-of-age ghost story about friendship, loss and revenge.

It's no handicap; Kevin swings into action for disabled golfers

Byline: LINDA WHITWAM

Kevin, who is a Town season ticket holder, has attended four of these events and they have given him a new lease of life. He counts the days to the next competition and has taken on the role of DGS handicap secretary. (His own handicap is now 18).Kevin, 52, of Pinecourt Mews, Netherton, had previously been a passionate sportsman, playing football, cricket and volleyball.A number of taster sessions at driving ranges and golf courses are also planned for September and October. He said: "The DGS is a wonderful thing, seeing the joy that it brings individuals with a disability. One by one, as his ankle injury worsened, he had to give up these sports. Then he found a new passion: golf.It meant his days of playing golf were badly hit. But now he hopes to set up a branch of the Disabled Golf Society in Huddersfield, to help people like him."If you are disabled and already playing golf, there is a high standard of golf and some healthy competition within the society."I would not go out of the house and became depressed and angry."He is now looking for local sponsors for this and future events and hopes to start a dialogue with other golf clubs in Kirklees which may be able to offer facilities.Members enjoy playing golf at all levels and overcome such disabilities as limb amputations, hip and knee replacements, arthritis, multiple sclerosis, autism and blindness. The society, which welcomes both experienced and new golfers, organises golf days and competitions throughout the country, although most are in the south of England or Midlands. Each event includes a taster session, often with specialised equipment, which gives non-golfing people with disabilities a chance to try out the sport. He said: "My life changed a couple of years ago after the bad fall. I felt like I had gone from hero to zero.DGS is a not-for-profit organisation which runs in tandem with the Fairways4all charity.KEEN sportsman Kevin Booth felt his life was over after a bad fall left him unable to walk more than a few yards."In fact we are looking for some good disabled golfers to join a team to take on Scotland at Slaley Hall in Northumberland in October. We need some true Northern grit.Kevin said: "We encourage anyone interested in disabled golf to attend at Dewsbury to support those playing and see what the society is all about. The society caters for all disabilities. He has already had his first success. On Monday, September 5, the first-ever Disabled Golf Society event will be hosted in Kirklees at Dewsbury District Golf Club. It will be a qualifier for all disabled golfers who hold an EGU handicap or an equivalent society handicap and can complete 18 holes."If you are disabled and have never tried golf, it can be very rewarding and gives people a new lease of life."Kevin, who is registered disabled and receives a war pension from the RAF, discovered the Disabled Golf Society (DGS). It was set up by a keen golfer who suffered serious injuries in a car crash and in less than two years it has grown to a membership of over 500."I have been inspired by people at these events and I am channelling all of my energies into the society."The accident, in 2009, was the latest in a series of falls caused by an old injury sustained in the 1980s when he was a ground radio engineer in the RAF."At a recent day at Northallerton and Thirsk Golf Club, the club captain was moved to tears. He had not realised what a humbling experience it was.Kevin regularly played three or four times a week and became one of the game's elite single figure golfers with a handicap of six. He was even captain of Rutland County Golf Club, near where he was living in 2002.* BIG HIT: Kevin Booth, handicap secretary for the Disabled Golf Society, with wife Cerise. Wooden Swing Set

Swing set as one of the most popular toys on family backyards and playgrounds provides unlimited fun and joy for kids playing around. There are three main kinds of swing sets that are made of different materials, plastic, metal, and wood. And wooden swing set gains more and more popularity and trends replace metal swing set due to its appearance appeal and safety characters while plastic swing set is the favorite for the family with young kids.

Wooden swing set has different shapes and sizes and colors to meet your preference to fit in backyard design with nature looks. The wooden materials could be treated wood, cedar and redwood. Treated wood has to be chemically treated to prevent decay and insect damages while cedar and redwood with nature resistance to decay and insects are ideal materials for swing sets. However, the biggest drawback comparing to metal swing set is that wooden swing set is more expensive. It gives the family with tight budget hard decision to make. Single swing set could cost couple hundreds dollars while the large swing set with additional play ground equipments could be tagged with thousands dollars.Wooden swing set is easy to be attached by other playground equipments like sides, climbing walls and glides and even play deck. With a play set, parents are able to provide kids with wonderful childhood and precious memories which would be benefit for their future life. With the nature characters of wood materials, durable, nature looking, safety benefits, wooden swing sets have convinced many people to vote their favorite to them. Bringing birds up close; these outdoor aviaries are sociably near decks and patios

Designed for viewing, these three outdoor aviaries show sensible, enjoyable ways to house pet birds. Rather than isolate them in cages where they would rarely be seen or heard, these California structures, designed as integral parts of outdoor living areas, keep birds sociably close to decks and patios.

A porch swing to enjoy the singing In Whittier, Priscilla and Michael McClure chose to build their aviary in their property's best location for birds-under trees in the southwest corner of their garden, next to an 8-foot wall. The birds thrived, but the McClures discovered they had little interaction with them except at feedings. They couldn't bring the birds closer to the house, so they built a deck around the aviary (see photograph above). "Now the deck provides an intimate setting, where we can relax and enjoy the birds," says Mr. McClure. Patio aviary for indoor/outdoor viewing Taking advantage of a patio overhang, Martha and Manuel Coronado of Citrus Heights tucked their aviary part way under its eave This shelters the aviary and also makes it an intimate part of their living area. In the Sacramento Valley, some winters can be nippy. "When it's cold," says Mrs. Coronado, "we cover the north and south sides with plastic and plug in a covered electric light to warm our birds." Freestanding aviary, viewing deck In Santa Rosa, Carol and Bill Dickinson put an aviary off an existing deck (see photograph at near left) so they could watch their birds-doves, canaries, and finches-and listen to their songs. "It's like a symphony when they all sing together." Two dead madrones support the aviary's roof beam. Branches, secured into holes drilled in the trees' trunks, form perches. The front, part of the sides, and about a third of the roof are open for viewing; the rest of the structure is shingled. Some practical hints For advice on choosing birds, see page 122. And be sure to check local building codes before you build an aviary. Choose your site carefully. It should be warm in winter but not an inferno in summer. A wind-protected south or southeast exposure is best. In hot inland areas, provide afternoon shade. Dimensions. Small birds such as cockatiels and finches need room to fly. Make cages longer than wide-at least 5 feet wide and 10 feet long is best. Heights are usually 6 to 9 feet. Foundation. Use concrete blocks, footings, or posts, or lay a concrete slab. If burrowing rodents are a problem, set a sheet-metal or wire-mesh barrier 18 to 24 inches deep around the foundation. Floor. A concrete slab is easiest to clean (make sure it drains). For an aviary with plants, cover soil with sand, gravel, or wood shavings. Change shavings regularly; hose down sand and gravel. Framing. Wood is commonest (use nontoxic paint or stain), but steel or plastic tubing also works. Cover the frame with 1/2-inch aviary wire or 16-gauge welded wire mesh (12-gauge for large birds). Shelter. Protect birds from direct sun, rain, and wind by covering a section of the roof and part of the sides with wood or fiberglass (if weather is hot, cover fiberglass with shadecloth). To keep birds from pecking through wood, cover the inside of the aviary with mesh. Keep sheltered area light, or birds won't use it. Doors. To prevent escapes, plan a 3-foot-square vestibule" with two doors that swing in-one from the outside and one to the aviary. Enter and close the outside door before going into the aviary.

Sam's Northeast rollout underway; move may trigger warehouse war - Sam's Wholesale Club planning stores in Northeast

Sam's Northeast Rollout Underway

Sam's Northeast expansion also extends the reach of its parent Wal-Mart into a brand new region, paving the way for the firm to follow with Wal-Mart stores. Up to now, Sam's has opened clubs only in areas that house Wal-Marts.The top two chains in sales and stores are Sam's and Price Club, but they only share Virginia as a common state. The Price Club's four stores are in Richmond and the Tidewater area, while Sam's has one unit in Roanake. As awareness of the industry has grown among businessmen and consumers, membership warehouses have found that the resulting higher traffic and sales means that stores can be closer to each other and still be viable. This trend should cause more direct competition in the Northeast, a situation similar to that in Southern California. The Northeast is BJ's home market, with 16 of its 22 stores there. Sam's is going into five of BJ's markets. Price Club and PACE each have three units in the region, the Warehouse Club two and Makro and Net Cost Club one each. While Sam's has locked up the sites for its 18 stores, the four other membership warehouses are pursuing locations.BJ's is in Albany, Rochester, Syracuse, Wilmington and Portsmouth.Much of the warehouse clubs' expansion in the Northeast will likely see chains either taking locations adjacent to strip centers or shopping malls or even developing their sites into shopping centers. The Price Club is turning a number of its stores, including the one in North Haven, Conn., into shopping centers.BENTONVILLE, Ark. -- Sam's Wholesale Club plans to invade the Northeast with at least 18 stores during the next 30 months, an expansion move that has enormous implications for the membership warehouse field and its parent company, Wal-Mart.PACE is set to open its first store in the Northeast in Philadelphia. This is a natural expansion from the Baltimore/Washington area where it already has three units, with more due. The Price Club also has three stores in the Baltimore/Washington area. But the membership warehouses could face problems obtaining locations because the low rental, large undeveloped industrial sites favored by wholesale clubs are scarce in most metro areas in the Northeast and community opposition to large shopping centers is growing. Any slowdown in the Northeast's economy could help membership warehouses expand by making sites available at low, even, distress prices.Price Club plans to open a store this summer in Babylon, N.Y., as part of its expansion that will be focused primarily on the Western states and along the Eastern Seaboard. BJ's plans to unveil three or four stores in the Northeast, reportedly including units in Milford, Conn.; Edison, N.J.; and Allentown, Pa.Sam's is moving into the Northeast for the same reason other membership warehouses are expanding in the area: the 10-state region is a densely populated area with an average income higher than that of the country as a whole. It also has a strong, diversified economy that has weathered business swings better than other regions of the nation. Sam's first two stores are set to open this fall in Atlantic City and Delran Township, N.J.Once Sam's opens its Northeast stores, the West Coast and Rocky Mountain regions will be the only areas of the country where Wal-Mart doesn't operate either discount stores, membership warehouses or hypermarkets.Currently, the Northeast is understored with warehouse clubs. The region has only 26 wholesale clubs in eight states--less than the three dozen doing business just in Los Angeles alone. The industry's looming expansion, however, could result in the 10-state region getting about 50 new membership warehouses, including the Sam's, by the end of 1991.Makro, with one store in Langhorne, Pa., (and two in Baltimore/Washington) plans to expand to about 10 units in the Northeast by the end of next year, with an opening in Hartford, Conn., set for this year and in Deptford and Cherry Hill, N.J., in 1990.Sam's move into the Northeast follows that of Price Club, which has targeted the region as a prime growth area. The Price Club learned about marketing in the area from stores in North Haven, Conn.; Edison, N.J.; and Nesconset, N.Y.; and is now acquiring sites for more units.Sam's thrust in the Northeast focuses the spotlight on the extensive expansion planned by that chain and at least four other membership clubs--BJ's Wholesale Club, the Price Club, Makro and PACE--for the region, while also highlighting the growing competition among wholesale clubs throughout the nation.A number of the Sam's will follow the chain's new prototype, which includes such service departments as a scratch bakery, fresh produce, optical section and business service center in units that range in size up to 135,000 square feet. The Sam's in Delran Township, for example, will be 128,000 square feet.

BJ's is in Albany, Rochester, Syracuse, Wilmington and Portsmouth.

NASA 1989: suddenly it's 1986; readying some postponed science missions for launch

NASA 1989: Suddenly It's 1986

Well in advance, NASA dubbed 1986 "A Year for Space Science." Galileo would head for Jupiter (to arrive in December 1988), the far-seeing Hubble Space Telescope would orbit Earth at last, and Magellan was being groomed to go to Venus in two years. All of those plans vanished in the Challenger explosion, but this year the agency is setting out to recoup them and more.Late December 1989 will see shuttle astronauts deploy the huge Hubble telescope. Astronomers will first spend six months checking it out in orbit from the ground, then as long as 20 years looking at planets, at stars and out almost to the edges of the universe with its 2.4-meter mirror, which will give an unparalleled view because of its position above Earth's distorting atmosphere.Scientists most interested in LDEF's results include those concerned with life about NASA's planned space station. The seeds, dormant shrimp eggs and other life forms in LDEF will have experienced a half decade's exposure to cosmic rays, gamma rays and other Earth-orbit influences. When planted, will the seeds have mutated? Will they grow at all?Astronauts will periodically repair and replace the telescope's instruments. NASA, in fact, recently approved a study of what may be the first of the telescope's "second-generation" instruments. A combination of a near-infrared camera and multi-object spectrometer, it will equip Hubble to study the faint heat emissions from objects such as possible planetary systems now forming elsewhere in the galaxy, some of them first spotted in 1983 by the Infrared Astronomy Satellite. The proposed $80-million instrument's operation will depend on keeping its detectors cold, so they will be mounted within what one official describes as "a block of solid nitrogen the size of a refrigerator, which is inside a dewar cooled by a block of dry ice [solid carbon dioxide] inside another dewar."The materials tests range from paints and glasses to computer chips, some of them from the Defense Department. Will, for example, the ceramics -- essentially "fired" in their extended but presumably low-level radiation environment -- hold a key to harder materials with greater breaking strengths, for such applications as high-temperature turbine blades? The other major space event of the year, due late in August, was really triggered by the launch of Voyager 2 in 1977. The last planned feat on that mission's agenda, after visiting and returning enormous amounts of data from Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus: the first close look at Neptune.Pointedly not going up by shuttle is the Cosmic Background Explorer, or COBE, designed to sense emissions dating almost from the Big Bang. NASA originally intended to launch COBE from the shuttle, but modified the satellite in the aftermath of the Challenger explosion to ride a conventional Delta rocket--making it the first NASA spacecraft deliberately redesigned to get into space the old-fashioned way.Shuttle astronauts this year should make the long-overdue pickup of a device called the Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF), which has been waiting passively in orbit since astronauts put it there in 1984. Equipped with no electronics, no moving parts, it consists merely of a rack to expose various material and biological samples to the space environment. The original plan was to leave LDEF there for a year, but it stayed longer because of the busy shuttle schedule; then Challenger blew up, leaving LDEF still in space, from which NASA expects to retrieve it on Nov. 13.NASA's ambitious 1989 science agenda begins, however, with the first launch of a U.S. spacecraft to another planet since the Pioneer Venus mission took off in 1978. Like that Pioneer, Magellan is to map the cloud-shrouded surface of Venus by radar. Formerly planned for liftoff in 1988, it is now scheduled to depart from the shuttle on April 28. Planetary scientists often remark that a given mission will "keep researchers busy for years," but Magellan officials maintain the new craft will supply data for decades of study. It should reach Venus is August of 1990.

The materials tests range from paints and glasses to computer chips, some of them from the Defense Department. Will, for example, the ceramics -- essentially "fired" in their extended but presumably low-level radiation environment -- hold a key to harder materials with greater breaking strengths, for such applications as high-temperature turbine blades? Beds that slide out, swing down, or otherwise come out of hiding

Prestidigitation always figures in the best guest rooms; a little sleight of hand turns the space quickly into something useful when you don't have overnight visitors. But a bed is a pretty big thing to make disappear. Just where does it go?

The bed's headboard, end plate, and platform are all made of 3/4-inch plywood (the platform is stiffened with 2-by-4 side rails). Casters at the head and midpoint guide the bed out; once out, caster-footed pipe legs screw into flanges at the foot of the bed. The platform is about 18 inches longer than the mattress, so the head casters never pull all the way out.'There's only the slightest hint that a queen-size bed lurks behind the bookcase above. Tom DeLong of Costa Mesa, California, even set the pull where it's practically invisible tucked just beneath the second shelf. Behind the wall of this second-floor guest room addition, he constructed a box of 1/2-inch plywood in the adjacent attic. The box is sealed with duct tape and wrapped with R-19 fiberglass insulation to keep it from being too hot orAt left, a double bed slides out into the living room of a compact house on Bainbridge Island, Washington. The bed drawer slides under the floor of the kitchen, which is up four steps. Lower oil revenues put a damper on economy - Saudi Arabia

Lower Oil Revenues Put A Damper on Economy Last year was a tumultuous one for the oil industry and Saudi Arabia in particular, as OPEC producers broke away from set production quotas and Saudi Arabia abandoned its traditional role of swing producer to regina lost market share. The result was a drastic drop in the price of oil down to $8 a barrel in July. By the end of October, Sheikh Zaki Yamani was no longer Saudi oil minister and netback deals were out. By December, Planning Minister Hisham Nazer had succeeded Yamani and set to work on stabilizing the price of oil.

While the economic downturn has forced the Saudi Arabian government to tighten the fiscal belt, some Saudi officials believe that the loss of reserves will force the Kingdom to eliminate wasteful spending and prompt policymakers to lay out strategies and priorities for the Kingdom's further growth and development. The Saudi government continues to make policy and spending adjustments to deal with the ongoing problem of decreased oil revenues. The 1987 budget for Saudi Arabia totaled $45 billion, a 6 percent decrease from last year, with projected revenues of $17 billion. U.S. exports to Saudi Arabia continue to decline; the 1986 total was $3.45 billion, down from $4.5 billion in 1985. On the other hand, the United States imported $4.1 billion worth of goods from the Kingdom, mostly competitively priced petroleum. In spite of the economic downturn, there are still a number of opportunities for U.S. exporters in the Kingdom. Saudi Arabia remains the most lucrative market for the United States in the Middle East, the 13th largest U.S. market worldwide. For more information, contact the Saudi Arabia desk officer at (202) 377-5767.American businessmen have reported a slowdown in payments on some projects in the Kingdom. Certain firms claim that the work has already been done, while the Saudi government says that it is a matter of noncompliance on contract stipulations. Recently, there have been government-led efforts to speed up the payments process, though there is still a considerable backlog of claims.Upcoming Deparment of Commerce-sponsored missions to Saudi Arabia include Saudi Agriculture (April 1987), medical and hospital equipment (October 1987), communications (January 1988), and transportation (February 1988).Gone are the mammoth construction projects of the 1970s. The Saudi infrastructure has been completed for the most part. The primary focus of the Saudi Arabian government is the establishment of the services sector. Operations and maintenance has been identified as an excellent area of opportunity. Other areas include agricultural equipment; computers, software, and other high-technology items; health care equipment and medical supplies; and food processing and packaging equipment. The Saudi government's program to replace expatriate workers with qualified Saudi citizens has spurred an increase in the demand for education and manpower training expertise.

Green Mountain Power Strikes Long-Term, Low Cost Power Deal With NextEra Energy Resources

Green Mountain Power announced today that it has reached a purchase agreement with NextEra Energy Resources LLC, the largest renewable energy developer in the United States. The 23-year agreement is for electricity from its Seabrook nuclear plant in New Hampshire and is a fixed-price contract that adjusts with an inflation mechanism so as to protect customers from inevitable future power price swings. The energy price for 2012 is 4.66 cents per kilowatt hour.

Picking up the pieces of persecutionMary Powell, President and CEO of Green Mountain Power, said, "This agreement is very favorable for our customers, and delivers on the vision Green Mountain Power launched three years ago to move to a cleaner, greener future in a cost effective way. We set out to accomplish this by ramping up cost effective renewables while we built a solid portfolio that is low in carbon, cost and is incredibly reliable. This provides the perfect platform for our continued efforts to pursue cost effective renewable energy options."HPM offers an enhanced web portal that allows network providers to self-report HEDIS data online, in addition to the traditional methods of claims submission. Using the secure web portal is fast and easy -- and it won Tigers ticket packages for three HPM practices.Beginning in 2015, GMP will take 60 megawatts of Seabrook power ramping down to 40 megawatts by the end of the contract, representing approximately twenty percent of its total overall energy mix. An additional 25 megawatts of power will be made available to other Vermont utilities on the same favorable terms. The agreement was reached after several months of negotiations, and must be approved by Vermont's Public Service Board before taking effect. GMP will also purchase 15 megawatts of energy from NextEra Energy Resources for 2012-2014, a period during which GMP has been periodically replacing its expiring power supply contracts.Health Plan of Michigan (HPM) is committed to quality health care, and we give our providers additional tools to report this important HEDIS data. The Florida-based company is the leading US producer of wind power, and its solar array in California's Mojave Desert is currently the largest in the United States. Green Mountain Power and NextEra Energy Resources hope to continue to collaborate on future renewable energy projects in Vermont as Green Mountain ramps down its portfolio dependence on Seabrook.Three winners have been selected:Located in southern New Hampshire, the 1,245-megawatt Seabrook nuclear power plant has been in operation since 1990. NextEra Energy Resources is the majority owner and operator of the plant. In an effort to collect additional 2010 HEDIS data, HPM offered its network physicians an incentive to use the web portal for 2010 HEDIS hits. For every 2010 HEDIS submission entered through the web portal between March 1 and April 30, 2011, a provider received one entry into a drawing for 12 luxury suite tickets to a Tigers game, including food, beverages and parking. The more HEDIS data submitted, the more chances physicians had to win.MHSN Mercy Family Medicine of Grayling, MI

"There are reasons for optimism. Reasons to have faith in humanity. There were righteous Gentiles whose behaviour during the war exemplified the best of the human spirit. But most people, of course, were not up to the task." Set in 1938 and 1939, Far To Go follows the persecution of a Jewish family in the Sudetenland from the perspective of a person who should have been one of those "righteous Gentiles" but whose human frailty embroils her in their destruction.

Aaron K. Clark, MD PC of Port Huron, MILiz Miller, Commissioner of the Vermont Department of Public Service, said, "GMP has struck a deal for a price that looks good for its own customers and for the customers of other Vermont utilities that decide to participate. Keeping costs down for Vermonters is great for the state's economic development."SOURCE Health Plan of MichiganMarta is governess to Pepik, the son of Jewish textile factory owner Pavel Bauer and his wife Anneliese. Solar Lighting - Advantages and Disadvantages

Solar power is becoming more and more an acceptable and preferred renewable energy source. Developers are finding many uses for the power of the sun, and lighting may in fact be the quickest growing solar industry. With the push toward green living and a consumer's need to save money, solar powered lighting may just be the right option. There are many advantages to the lighting; however, there are also disadvantages to the systems. Every plus and minus should be weighed carefully before a person makes the decision to purchase solar lights.

Increasingly popular "sport pools' have a uniform 4- to 5-foot depth, ideal for basketball and volleyball (as well as swimming). The 20- by 40-foot pool at Judy and Sam Honaker's Albuquerque house is wide enough for three people at a net stretched between removable pipes. William Hays and Tim Walker designed pool and garden.Photo: Giant avocado tree supports swing A rocky border and poolside planting create a lush setting. The swing hangs from the arching branch of an avocado treeThen the set, which sits on a painted plywood platform rimmed with 1-by-2s, slides out on heavy-duty glides.A swing or rope hung from a branch lets you launch yourself into the water. In the garden at far right on the opposite page, a giant avocado tree extends a branch over the pool. Landscape architect Randon Garver of Santa Monica gave the pool a jungly look by running plants right up to a rock-lined edge. (Remember that overhanging trees--particularly ones like avocados, which shed flowers, fruit, and leaves--require extra pool maintenance.)Everywhere one looks it seems there is something saying that we all need to go green in whatever ways possible. With fears of energy sources running dry, a chance to add something green is a satisfying opportunity. By choosing solar powered lights, one has made one more step into a green way of life. With these lighting systems, each light is individually controlled with a photovoltaic panel and rechargeable battery package. The lights do not have to be wired together. This can be very advantageous, for a consumer will not have to bury electric lines or string them from one light to the next. For safety reasons as well as aesthetics, this can be a great advantage.Zero Cost of EnergyThe sun is a continuous energy source that is free to everyone who feels its rays. By using the power of the sun, a consumer no longer requires the use of electricity to run their lights. This means zero cost for the energy. This is especially pleasing for owners of parking lots or anyone who needs certain lighting on twenty four hours a day.Bursting from the water for a slam dunk or volleyball spike, flying through the air and landing with a splash, rocketing down a water slide--all sound like a child's summer fantasies. But they're hot-weather realities in the five swimming pools shown here.Photovoltaic lighting sounds great, but there can be some problems. Since the batteries depend on the sun for recharge, just a few days of storms and overcast skies can mean no lighting at night. Plus, the lights would be absolutely no good in an area that is always in the shade. The simplest pool addition is a basketball backboard at one end of Suzanne and Jerry Flynn's Los Angeles lap pool. The removable backboard and rim are not regulation size: 1/2-inch particle board forms the 2- by 3-foot backboard; the rim came from an indoor foam-ball game. Two U-shaped pipe supports clamp around a threaded 1 1/4-inch galvanized pipe rising 30 inches from a fitting set in the brick. They can sit or stand on the 1/2-inch-thick acrylic ringAlthough the maintenance costs of solar powered lighting are little to none, the initial investment can be quite pricey, since the whole new system must be purchased. It can be a big investment to go from electric power to solar, and it may be too large of an investment for some. With careful thought and a little study, one can weigh the advantages to a new lighting system to the disadvantages. After considering all of the options, it will make the choice of whether or not to choose Solar Lighting much, much easier.Recessed bullet catches mounted on the sides of the television door secure it when it's closed. But, solar power technology is not yet dependable enough to say that all situations can benefit. In situations where dependable lighting is an absolute must, regular electricity is still the best option.Since no tree branches at Susan and Don Norberg's house reached over their pool, Pasadena landscape designer William Woods added the inverted L-shaped arm shown above right. Set 6 feet into concrete, a 6-inch steel pipe rises 18 feet; the 4-inch pipe arm with knee brace extends 16 feet over the pool. A sturdy rope with a reinforcing thimble connects to the arm with an anchor shackle; an acrylic disc makes a perch. This is not for young children, warns Woods.Ease of Installation

With careful thought and a little study, one can weigh the advantages to a new lighting system to the disadvantages. After considering all of the options, it will make the choice of whether or not to choose Solar Lighting much, much easier.

Prepackaged SetsBest for Non-criticalLandscape architect Ned Bosworth of Fullerton, California, turned a problem hillside into a slippery bonus when he designed the twisting, 20-foot-long slide that follows the steep grade. Surfaced with the same colored plaster as the pool, the slide has its own pump to keep a steady stream of water flowing down its face.If one is considering buying more than one solar powered light, like walkway lighting for example, packaged sets are available for purchase. These sets will include the LED light bulb(s), rechargeable battery, housing, and the PV panel and any other required parts, making set up extremely simple for the purchaser. In most cases, the consumer can set up their own lights without having to pay the money to hire a professional.Since the lighting systems recharge themselves everyday, the maintenance and care of them is extremely low. And, the lights will continue to work for years to come. LED bulbs last ten times longer than a standard bulb and the batteries will continue to recharge themselves. At worst, the only regular maintenance that the light will need is a cleaning every once in a while to make sure the panel is not covered with dust.Low MaintenancePhoto: Swing-up panel lifts up and slides back into enclosure above television; set then rolls out on heavy-duty drawer glidesAs mentioned before, these lighting systems are extremely easy to install.
