League at succeed to set up fixtures

THE track period is now in total swing, but the committee of the Start Fitness North East Harrier League have by now been busy formulating dates for the cross-place campaign.

At the league's AGM it was impressive to have far more clubs coming ahead to host a fixture than is usually the situation.

And the league breaks new ground subsequent year when Alnwick Harriers will host a fixture for the 1st time underneath the backdrop of Alnwick Castle thanks to the assistance of the Duke of Northumberland.

The last of the English Schools' Cross-Region Cup Final was held on adjoining land to the castle previously this 12 months and prior to that the 1st two European Cross-Region Championships took site in 1994 and 1995.

As well as staying a primary for the Alnwick club it will also be a number one for the enormous amount of athletes who flip out religiously in 1 of the UK's most triumphant crosscountry leagues.

Blyth, who have promoted a fixture for the prior 3 seasons, made a decision to phase apart as they are internet hosting the North Eastern Cross-Place Championships.

However, the East Northumberland club would like to be granted a fixture next time.

Sunderland, Blaydon, Elswick, Saltwell and Tynedale, jointly with Alnwick, are the six hosts with Jarrow and Hebburn, with each other with South Shields, will place on the Davison Shield and Sherman Cup.

The league is also bringing in a new format for the senior women's portion. With fields of through 100 often turning out, it was decided to split the clubs into two divisions with the the best ten finishers from last year forming division one and the rest into division two.

With a two up two down format it is hoped it will add interest to the expanding popularity of the league.

When once again the League is grateful for the generous sponsorship from Get started Fitness who not only supply all race figures and tape to mark out the training course but also hand out bumper awards for the grand prix series at the finish of the year or so.
